EXPRESSION OF CYTOKERATINS AND AMELOGENIN IN AMELOBLASTOMAS AND ADENOMATOID ODONTOGENIC TUMORS

Abstract
Ameloblastomas and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, as benign epithelial odontogenic tumors, are considered to be derived from enamel organ of tooth germs. But the histogenesis and origin of these tumors are still remained uncertain. To investigate the histogenesis of ameloblastomas and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, the distribution pattern of cytokeratins was observed, as compared to odontogenic epithelium. The expression of amelogenin was also studied as a marker of secretory function representative of mature odontogenic epithelium. The results indicated that ameloblastoma appeared to have dual differentiation toward squamous epithelium and ameloblastic cells, however, the differentiation to ameloblasts might be arrested before the stage of secretory function. On the other hand, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors semed to show ameloblastic differentiation with secretory activity, derived from pluripotential cells.
